The Bonnaroo Tales, Vol. I: Runnin' On Empty

Yea it's taken me a while to talk some Bonnaroo. It's taken me a while to talk some anything. Well...tough. Sorry, that's all I have to say about it. Oh, that, and you're gonna wait a little longer as I recap the festival day by day. You like it.

It's often said that life isn't a sprint--it's a marathon. For this guy, the past 3 weeks or so have been some sort of delirious mash-up of the entire race. There's been a lot of talk among my circle recently of racing and running and living lots of life in a short while, and I feel like that's what I've been doing since I last posted, lo those many moons ago.

In the last two weeks I saw Phish in New York and New Jersey, drove to freaking Canada and back (a return trip that took 12 hours door-to-door and a Baseball Roadshow that deserves its own post entirely), and ran my Yankee Stadium record to 4-0 on the year so far -- all while looking for a 3 bedroom apartment in Manhattan. All this immediately followed a week that had completely rocked my world. I found myself reuniting with slews of old friends, and even a couple of exes. I have crammed what feels like a lifetime's worth of chaos, stress, action, confusion -- and yes, fun -- into a relatively short amount of time. There are many tales yet to be written, but the big one - or at least the story that best encompasses all of what I've been feeling these last few weeks - is Bonnaroo.

Bonnaroo is a literal and figurative time warp. As you make your way to the festival – at least if you’re truly road trippin' it – the miles and hours pile up and the journey feels interminable. Though we arrived in Manchester around 7:30 Thursday evening and made it inside after only a short wait (leaving us exactly enough daylight to set up camp and avoid a torrential downpour -- 'Roo Success #1!), some unfortunate souls are made to wait upwards of 5 hours to physically enter the festival grounds from the highway. The whole experience can feel like a never-ending odyssey. But once you reach your destination, the opposite effect occurs. Time seems to simply melt from one music-filled moment to the next. By the time the festival hits full stride, you’re not quite sure where one day starts and the next ends, and the places you’ve come from and intend to be going to at festival’s end feel like distant planets from a bygone time. On top of this dreamlike state of consciousness brought on by the long journey, oppressive Tennessee heat, sprawling music schedule stretching from noon until 4am daily, and never-ending stream of wild and crazy people, the state of Tennessee spans two time zones. Apparently there’s a sign that indicates when you’ve crossed over into Central Time, but no one in our car got that memo, which made for a confusing start to the trip when we had to figure out what time to go see Passion Pit on Thursday night. So it goes. If the whole festival experience has a time warp element to it, this confusion was probably the most appropriate way to start. Passion Pit were jumping at This Tent, we danced around, unnecessarily circumnavigated the entire campground in pouring rain on the way back to our spot, dried off and went to bed. It was the best night's sleep I'd had in nearly a month.

Where's Smelly?

As promised, here's our boy, friend of Schiff Happens, former fat kid, "that dick," and star of late night telly-vision!!!!

Looks like someone from the old neighborhood finally done up and come up. If you ask me, he's pretty easy to find, but test your eyesight and see if you can figure out... Where's Smelly Pelly? Special prize to whoever can find Max Weinberg and the Max Weinberg Seven. Like I said earlier today, I had a tough enough time finding Conan, who's obviously right smack in the middle of the thing. Jimmy Vivino is a pretty easy find. Other than that, I'm fairly useless, but I've also been slowly going blind since age 10, so you'll probably have better luck. The pic below is a bit more zoomed in, but at the expense of a few people on the outer edges. Sorry, your staff is huge (that's what she said?).

Congrats to Conan O'Brien, Smelly, and the whole shebangabang down there at 30 Rock.

Brett and Jemaine sing for love

I'm not much for Valentine's Day, but I do love me some musical comedy. So here now are my top Flight of the Conchords love songs. When you break it down, there's something for everyone you may have encountered this weekend.

"The Most Beautiful Girl"

This one is for your first encounters. The first daters or the like-minded singles whose eyes meet across the crowded bar or party. If you're lucky, your friend Dave won't mind if you make a move, and she'll be impressed with your dance moves. Then you can share a kebab with the most beautiful girl you've ever seen with a kebab (and possibly the most beautiful girl on the street, depending on the street), and maybe even take her back to your place. Just remember to pay for the cab.

"If You're Into It"

Isn't young love beautiful? When you're first dating, things are so hot and new and fresh that you're willing to try just about anything. For many guys, Valentine's Day is the perfect time to try and find out what your girl is into. By taking your girlfriend out to an expensive dinner and showering her with useless lavish gifts, you figure you have license to try and get her to go for something that maybe she didn't even know she was into. Of course, you'd be willing too, if you only knew that was what she's into. That's just the kind of sweetheart you are.

"Brett You've Got It Goin On"

Relationships can be hard to maintain. Sometimes you need a romantic Valentines Day to say to your special someone, "Hey babe, I still love you. You still got it goin on." These are the people you saw screaming at each other outside the bar while you waited in line for the hot dog cart on the corner. This song is also dedicated to the big groups of singles who went out last night to remind themselves that they're just as desirable as all the uppity couples, and eff them anyway because we're single and we don't need no stinkin relationship to make us happy. Sometimes it's nice to have your friends remind you that you've got it goin on - not in a gay way.

"Friends"

Unfortunately, most of the time you're not gonna be able to resucitate that dying relationship. You'll break things off and tell each other that it's not working out, but you really want to be friends. This will all go peacefully enough, until the next time you and your buddies walk into a party and she's there with her new beau, and you think to yourself, "He's my friend - she's not my friend." Of course, if you're lucky, things work out...

"Business Time"

...and, well, you know what happens next (after you sort the recycling of course). Because really, isn't this all anyone is really hoping for on Valentine's Day?
